Overview Fall 2025 & Spring 2026 - Government Affairs (Federal and External Affairs) - 90290801 - Washington Amtrak is recruiting for the Fall 2025 & Spring 2026 Government Affairs internship in Washington. The role supports the department's corporate legislative strategy with key stakeholders in Congress and relevant federal departments, underpinning the federal government’s investment in intercity passenger rail for decades to come. The team works to ensure Congress is well informed to keep passenger rail relevant for customers in the years ahead. Responsibilities Punctuality with office presence and adherence to schedules; provide timely notice of absences or changes. Attend Capitol Hill meetings or meetings with outside groups with a member of department staff. Attend public hearings as appropriate, alone or with staff. Conduct research projects, data entry/analysis/visualization, and record key data (e.g., votes, demographics, election cycles, transportation trends). Organize documents for permanent files, meetings, events, or hearing preparation. Support congressional correspondence, memos, and testimony with strong writing skills. Assist with special events (e.g., large travel groups, student tours, dignitary travel). Engage in other activities as they arise. Business attire is expected. Minimum Qualifications Actively pursuing a degree at an accredited institution. Undergraduate degree pursuit in Political Science, Public Administration, Business Administration, or related field. At least 2 years of undergraduate study completed or junior status at minimum. Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher. Ability to function in a collaborative work environment and communicate effectively orally and in writing within the corporation and externally. Demonstrates core values including humility, mission, courage, justice, prudence, and self-control. Preferred Qualifications Understanding of legislative floor and Committee procedures and Capitol Hill operations. Understanding of authorization and appropriation processes. Basic understanding of the transportation industry. Cover letter and a 1–2 page writing sample recommended. Work Environment Ability to work in a fast-paced, time-sensitive environment with changing priorities and deadlines; manage multiple projects. Strong verbal and written communication; ability to work under pressure. Regular use of computer and related equipment to perform tasks. Office-based with potential remote work access; travel as needed. Ability to walk through transportation facilities wearing PPE when required. Frequent or occasional national travel (air, train, automobile); overnight train travel may be required. Compensation and Schedule Hourly range: $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay based on factors including school year and program of study. Paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges and one PTO day per academic year. Fall 2025 & Spring 2026 program runs from October 6, 2025 – April 24, 2026.
