TITLE: Instructional Designer

DEPARTMENT: Information Technology

STATUS: Full-Time, Exempt

SALARY: $70,000 - $80,000

MAJOR FUNCTION:

Plays a key role in designing, developing, and delivering a variety of eLearning assets, modules, and courses that support Salvation Army objectives and mission. Collaborates with various departments at both territorial and command levels to understand their training needs and create effective learning solutions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Instructional Design (50%)

  • Collaborate with various departments to gather training requirements and ensure learning objectives align with business goals.
  • Design, develop, and implement engaging and effective eLearning modules and courses aligned with defined learning objectives.
  • Conduct needs analysis to identify learner personas and preferences.
  • Present ideas and designs effectively to stakeholders or teams.
  • Accept and incorporate feedback into design revisions.
  • Develop formative and summative assessments to measure learning outcomes.
  • Analyze learner performance data to improve instructional strategies.
  • Provide input on implementation, deployment, and use of eLearning system.
  • Stay up to date with current instructional design trends and best practices.

Content Creation and Management (40%)

  • Research, gather and synthesize information to build credible content.
  • Visualize content and design storyboards for eLearning multimedia content.
  • Write scripts for videos, voiceovers, and interactive scenarios.
  • Create a variety of instructional materials and assets, including graphics, videos, presentations, user guides, instruction materials, etc.
  • Maintain and manage content library and repositories.

Project Management (10%)

  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders throughout the content and course development process.
  • Manage timelines and collaborate with cross-functional teams when needed.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met and training materials are of high quality.
  • Document project progress and status to keep all relevant parties informed.
  • Report on completed projects and ensure all project completion processes are finalized.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Understanding of adult learning theories (e.g., Bloom's Taxonomy, ADDIE model, Constructivism, Behaviorism).
  • Knowledge of Kirkpatrick's Four Levels of Training Evaluation.
  • Knowledge of eLearning tools for developing interactive content (e.g. Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate).
  • Knowledge of multimedia tools (e.g. Adobe Suite, Canva).
  • Basic skills in video editing, graphic design, and audio editing.
  • Strong technical and creative writing skills for creating clear, concise, and engaging content.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative in a dynamic, mission-driven environment.

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Experience designing and developing eLearning or instructor-led training materials and courses.
  • Experience with Learning Management Systems, with preference given to experience in Litmos.
  • Project management certification or experience.
  • Familiarity with Agile project management.
  • Experience in prototyping and testing designs with users.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Google Analytics, or LMS reporting features.
  • Experience as a teacher, trainer, or facilitator is a plus.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of The Salvation Army preferred.
