JOB PURPOSE:

Prepare daily and weekly scheduled programs daily and weekly on the automation system weekly from the stations archives or file transfer protocols from Native one broadcast. Other duties include providing a live broadcast for daily events and activities the university community and surrounding communities submit. Student employee must sign and abide by rules and protocols established by the manager.

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Schedules and programs that are programmed in the automation system (Simian) and oversee its operations daily.
  • Prepares daily schedules for daily broadcasts from File Transfer Protocol (FTP) and Native One Broadcasts.
  • Instructs students individually in the proper operations of equipment and procedures that are outlined to for volunteers and students in the control room and production studios.
  • Maintains music listings and programs that are being utilized in daily programming of the radio station broadcast.
  • Broadcasts a live show that provides weather, university updates, community information, and local news for the listenership of KCZY
  • Maintains basic knowledge to operate, maintain, and makes minor adjustments and repairs of equipment used daily at the radio station such as website, automation, and remote broadcast equipment.
  • Maintains all the radio station inventory records of supplies, materials, and equipment, and prepares requisitions as needed.
  • Collects radio public service announcements (PSA) from university departments chairs and those sent to the radio station email.
  • Maintains and sanitizes the radio station studios and keeps equipment cleaned.
  • Assists all volunteers and students with instructions and producing radio shows for weekly programming.
  • Provides training and direction for student employees.
  • Ensures proper operation of live radio and recording studio equipment.
  • Assists students in recording production, as appropriate; provides guidance in learning and/or functional operation of studio recording equipment.
  • Cleans and disinfects facilities and equipment after daily operations and studio broadcasters are finished utilizing studios.
  • Breaks down and stores supplies and equipment.
  • Practices safety, environmental, and/or infection control methods.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Radio Station Manager or IT Director.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a student majoring in related field, or related discipline, or relevant interest.
  • One-year radio and media experience is desired.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass background check, with NO prior convictions of any felonies.

The Navajo Nation Preference in Employment Act applies to all hiring, promotions or transfers of individuals into this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • General radio station knowledge and knowledge in all the related radio station equipment.
  • Skilled in live or recorded broadcasting procedures and techniques used in the radio station industry.
  • Skilled in public speaking and performing on air in public settings.
  • Scientific methods of measurements.
  • Health and safety practices and precautions applicable to providing a safe and healthy environment.
  • Principles of recordkeeping. Knowledge of the principles and practices of radio broadcast production and recording.
  • Knowledgeable in basic Federal Communications Commission rules and regulations regarding a community radio station.
  • Effectively and safely operate, adapt, and maintain all radio station equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs and adjustments to a computers and radio station equipment.
  • Stay abreast of technical subjects, practices, and developments in the field of radio station and media broadcasting.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with students and instructional staff.
  • Give clear and concise instructions to students.
  • Effectively utilize computer hardware and software used daily at the radio station.
  • Skilled in contacting equipment vendors and schedule maintenance of equipment.
  • Skill in operating business computers, phone systems, and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as Simian, Audition. Audacity, etc)
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and FEPA standards.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to stand for prolonged periods, walk and sit.
  • Use hands for dexterity of motion, repetitive movement of both hands.
  • Have normal auditory, visual acuity, and verbal communications skills.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25-40 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work is generally performed in a radio station studio setting.
  • Tight time constraints and multiple demands are common.
  • Evening and/or weekend work may be required. Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Learning new ideas to advance the radio station may also be required.
