Description

Provide fire suppression and emergency medical services; attend and complete required training; respond to calls; investigate various situations; and fight fires and provide emergency medical services in compliance with all department and state rules and regulations.

The essential functions of the job are not limited to those listed in the job description. The City retains the discretion to add to or change the duties of the position at any time.

  • Maintains state of constant readiness for immediate response to multi-hazard emergencies; participates in training by attending and completing state and department required training; teaches classes to fire department personnel; provides customer service through assisting internal and external customers with a variety of tasks; teaches classes and provides tours to the public; installs smoke alarms; and other tasks as needed.
  • Provides emergency medical response and care by securing the scene; evaluating the medical condition of the patient through proper assessment; delivering appropriate care including performing CPR if needed; utilizing medical equipment and materials; lifting and transporting patients; recording patient reports; communicating with patients and families; and wearing appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Provides emergency incident stabilization and fire suppression services by quickly evaluating the specific incident; pulling and using hoses; climbing and lift ladders; using power tools and specialized equipment.
  • Handles maintenance and ensures proper operation by checking, cleaning and preventative maintenance and repair of facilities; equipment; apparatus; and fire hydrants.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Performs station maintenance and fire equipment maintenance.
  • Providing public education.
  • Acts as relief driver by driving and operating fire apparatus in the absence of the Firefighter/Engineer.
  • Attends meetings and training sessions.
  • Performs additional duties to support operational requirements as assigned.

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED, ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operations of machines. No experience required.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record according to City criteria
  • Candidate will be required to obtain certification of Emergency Medical Technician - Basis, Firefighter Level I and II, and Emergency Vehicle Operator Course within a probationary period

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered in lieu of the specific requirements listed above

MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE
Typically requires use of standard office equipment and telephone, and related software and hardware; and any other tools and equipment as appropriate or as assigned, including Fire Equipment, Truck, SCBA, Protective Gear, Axe, Generators, Hose, Water, EMS Equipment, Training Wear.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
This work is performed in an office environment and on emergency scenes, where there may be noise and vibration weekly; respiratory hazards, extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, physical hazards monthly. There are occasional mechanical, chemical, electrical, and fire hazards, communicable diseases, physical danger or abuse. There is rare exposure to explosives.


The employee is expected to use appropriate protective equipment for the assigned task (hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe shoes, etc.), and any other equipment as apparent or assigned, if any.
