Job Description

A K-12 school in Westfield, MA is seeking an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (OMS) for a contract position spanning the full school year (NSY). This role requires a dedicated professional to provide specialized support to students with visual impairments, promoting their independence and confidence in navigating indoor and outdoor environments.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess students orientation and mobility needs and develop individualized programs.
• Provide direct instruction in the use of mobility aids such as canes and electronic devices.
• Train students in safe and effective travel techniques within school and community settings.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other specialists to integrate mobility goals into educational plans.
• Monitor and document student progress, adjusting strategies as necessary.
• Attend relevant meetings and professional development sessions.

Qualifications:

• Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) or equivalent credential.
• Experience working with K-12 students who are visually impaired.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage effectively with students, families, and school staff.
• Ability to develop individualized educational and mobility plans.
• Knowledge of current best practices in orientation and mobility for visually impaired individuals.
