About the Position: The Writing Center (WC) is seeking student writing tutors to work with UAS students. The job requires solid writing skills and the ability to coach students through all stages of the writing process, though we do provide training with our "grow-a-tutor" model. Perfect writing is not required, but a strong foundation and a willingness to learn are. A student tutor position is a great opportunity to improve mentoring skills, learn about tutoring/teaching strategies, and gain professional work experience. Student tutors are also involved in special projects run by the Writing Center such as writing contests and the publication of the in-house academic journal, Summit. Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and filled as positions become available. While the WC is always thrilled to hire tutors with previous tutoring experience, this is not required. To get hired as a tutor, your basic writing skill set should be solid, but it doesn't have to be perfect! With the WC's "grow a tutor" model, we will continuously teach you writing and tutoring techniques throughout your employment. The key qualities you should have to be a great tutor include the desire to help your fellow students, a nonjudgmental approach, and enthusiasm for writing. A successful candidate will show willingness to learn tutoring strategies, improve personal writing abilities, and grow as a tutor. You should have knowledge of basic academic course content and tutoring strategies and the ability to recognize various learning styles, communicate effectively with students and faculty, and be highly responsible and organized. A successful candidate will be able to exercise independent judgment and decision-making. Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must be enrolled as a UA student taking a minimum of 6 credits per semester with a minimum GPA of 2.0 or a newly enrolled student. Average grade of "B" or better in previous English courses. Completion of or present enrollment in writing-intensive classes including WRTG211 or WRTG212 is preferred. Some prior tutoring experience, even informal, is preferred. This is a pooled position, which means that the position remains open over the entire academic year.
