Performs direct and indirect patient care activities under the supervision of a registered professional nurse. Assists in providing high quality, cost-effective care by performing delegated tasks. Proactively interacts with patients families and other customers to ensure a family centered experience. Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent and obtaining certification in Basic Life Support or HeartSaver First Aid within 30 days of hire date. Prior patient care experience preferred. Core duties include assisting in direct patient care by providing basic physical care to promote patient comfort as directed by the Registered Nurse, assisting patients with activities of daily living, safely transporting patients according to WVUH’s Safe Patient Handling Policy, transporting specimens and items, performing assigned tests such as glucose monitoring and routine phlebotomy services, obtaining and recording vital signs, providing respiratory support, encouraging use of Incentive Spirometer, observing and reporting patient condition changes, preparing patients for examinations and diagnostic procedures, assisting physicians and registered nurses, assisting with basic rehab/Physical Therapy activities, communicating nutrition issues, providing total care when assigned sitter responsibilities, maintaining a clean and safe environment, maintaining clean unit equipment, reporting equipment repairs, assisting in routine unit operations, answering telephone and patient call bell courteously, relaying messages, completing errands, limited access to medications during transport, and removing out of date items. Physical requirements include heavy/hard work with lifting and moving up to 50 pounds and pushing/pulling carts up to 200 pounds, with use of lift equipment for patient handling. Work environment accommodates reasonable accommodations for disabilities. Skills required include competency in Safe Patient Handling equipment, excellent communication and customer service skills, ability to handle multiple demands, and good time management skills. Scheduled weekly hours are 36, night shift, non-exempt status.
